Name: Vanya Hargreeves, aka Number Seven
Canon: The Umbrella Academy
Age: 29
Appearance: Short, young white woman with big brown eyes and long brown hair. Sometimes her eyes turn white and her skin gets unnaturally white and glowy when she uses her power.
Canon Point: End of Season 1
Background: Wiki.

Personality: Vanya comes from a big abusive family, and she was the designated scapegoat. This sums up most of her issues.

Because she supposedly didn’t have powers and ‘wasn’t special’, her father constantly reminded her that she was useless and implicitly encouraged her six siblings to do the same. Since her siblings were children who were also stuck in an abusive household, scrabbling for their father’s approval, most of them fell in line and excluded Vanya even from activities that she could have participated in without powers. Since their mother was a robot, their ‘uncle’ was a talking ape who couldn’t go outside, and none of them were allowed out of the house, Vanya had no source of socialization or human affection growing up. She was a deeply lonely child, and her ability to speak up for herself was crippled by the fact that her father put her on emotional suppressant medication to hide the powers she really had all along.

All this caused fathomless resentment and rage, but Vanya’s medication and her genuine belief that she loves her family and they love her (deep, deep, deeeeeeep down) kept a lid on it for most of her adult life. As an adult, she is still lonely and has no close relationships to speak of, likely due to the fact she just doesn’t know how to reach out to people and maintain close relationships (plus she’s kind of a downer to be around while she’s on her medication, since it’s so hard for her to emote or otherwise display positive emotions). But then her boyfriend stole her medication and then her brother, Luther, betrayed her and locked her into a soundproofed chamber that traumatized Vanya as a child, so the cork on her rage popped.

Because her medication affected her personality so greatly, there will be some things on the following bullet point list of Vanya’s personality that contradict each other. That’s because her behavior markedly changes when she stops taking her medication, but she still behaved a certain way for twenty-five years of her life, and those traits will likely sometimes emerge when she is uncertain.

• Kind and caring – she displays this when she tries to keep the house always ready for her long lost brother to return, when she checks in on her sister after being mistreated, and when she reassures Leonard when he expresses insecurity about trying to learn the violin as an adult.
• Holds a grudge – despite having not seen her siblings for twelve years, she still has a lot of deep resentment for the way they treated her as a child and the way they continued to treat her as adults.
• Hardworking – she is probably the sibling who has worked hardest to get where she is today, as she has no powers to help her and she chooses to be special by working hard to be good at the violin.
• Self-centered – she published a book detailing their childhood abuse, and it’s implied that she did not ask her siblings before doing so or give them a heads up. She did this either because she didn’t think about how it’d feel to have their abuse dragged into the limelight, or she didn’t care, possibly because of the aforementioned grudge.
• Patient – she displays patience when working as a teacher, when tolerating her siblings’ slights without complaint, and when declaring that she believes they love her and she wants what’s best for them despite them not doing anything to display it.
• Vindictive – Vanya, when she has decided to hurt someone, goes all out. She uses every sharp object in the building to stab her boyfriend to death for manipulating her, she impales her uncle-figure on the horns of a hunting trophy and watches him die for enabling her childhood abuse, and she blows up each of her siblings’ rooms for betraying her. Even when protecting herself from her sister, she slices Allison’s throat unconsciously in such a precise way that she’ll never be able to use her power against Vanya again.
• Confident and willful – As soon as she’s off her medication, a switch flips and Vanya is suddenly auditioning on stage with confidence, articulately calling out her siblings’ bullshit with confidence, and even standing up to her boyfriend’s manipulation with confidence, implying that she does have a spine and it’s been hidden under all that medication.
• Short-tempered – At the end of the season, Vanya is flipping over cars because people call her a bitch, and she started screaming at her sister for expressing doubts about her boyfriend. It’s possible that this is a product of the drug withdrawal or just the really, really shitty week Vanya had.
• Passive – Vanya, prior to stopping her medication, never stands up for herself on screen. She just visibly wilts when her siblings or father say hurtful things and walks out of the situation as fast as she can.
• Attention-hungry – Vanya craves attention, praise, and validation, mainly because she’s never had any. This is part of why she wanted to be successful with her orchestra, since being successful there would make her the oh-so-elusive ‘special’, and once she’s ‘special’, then people will like her and her life will be complete. She has a secret dramatic flair that’s shown off in her final orchestra, and it could be shown off more now that she’s had her medication.
• Polite – Vanya seems to be generally very polite and well-mannered when dealing with people. This is partially an outgrowth of her passivity and tendency to fade into the background, her experience needing to tread lightly around her father and superpowered siblings, and partially of her understanding of how it feels to be small.
• Impulsive – While Vanya seems perfectly thoughtful and functional in day to day life while on her medication, once she’s off, she suddenly becomes impulsive and does dramatic things like deciding to murder her boyfriend on a snap decision, not notifying her place of work that she will be absent, and collapsing a building that she is still inside of. The main emotion that seems to precede impulsive decision-making is anger, and it’s probably because she’s not used to managing it without her medication dulling it down.

Weaknesses/Temptations: Attention, love, and validation. All it took for Leonard to convince Vanya to be loyal only to him was to say that she was special and she didn’t need to apologize for existing. Vanya has been so starved for social contact that she will buckle at the first sign that maybe, just maybe, someone will like her and think she’s worth something.

Another weakness is her relationship with her siblings. She believed they loved her, and now she’s not sure. Poke her in that sore spot—telling her that they’ll never love her, that they never loved her, that they’re right not to care, that she’s useless and not special, etc.—and you’ll get a powerful reaction. It’s a similar story if you tell her that her father was right about her, or if you remind her of her father in any way; she’s liable to go agro.

Not much else will faze her. She doesn’t need money, she now has power, fame is appealing but not so appealing that she’ll be convinced of doing something she thinks is wrong, and she isn’t especially tempted by sex. But she really, really wants to be loved.

Powers/Abilities:
Atmokinesis – Weather control, usually influenced by her feelings.
Super Hearing – She can hear at far distances and can hear other people’s heartbeats.
Sound Manipulation – Her powers are vaguely based on sound, meaning she needs to have a sound to focus on in order to use the following powers. She’s most powerful when she’s making the sound herself, like with her violin or her heartbeat.
Telekinesis – She’s able to lift people and objects and manipulate them with force and precision.
Sound Wave Projection – After taking in a sound, she’s able to externalize the sound with a shockwave or laser. This includes blunt force throwing people off their feet, explosions, and precise slashing damage (like, 'cut your sister's vocal chords from five feet away but not kill her' precise), and likely more.
Geokinesis – Vanya can cause earthquakes that damage the ground or take down whole buildings. A reliable sign that she’s getting pissed off is usually tremors and lights flickering.
Life Absorption? – There is a scene where Vanya is connected to all of her living brothers through a beam of white light and the life is visibly drained out of them, implying that maybe she’s absorbing it. This isn’t explicitly confirmed.
Emotion manipulation? – There is a scene where Vanya, fresh off her medication, plays her music for a disinterested director and we the audience see soundwaves wafting from her violin, and as soon as they hit her audience, they immediately sit at attention and dopily smile while listening, eventually giving her the part she was auditioning for. It’s not clear whether she was just better at the violin without her medication or if her powers had something to do with it, but I think the visible sound waves were implying that her power was involved.
LASER BEAMS – At some point she charged up her power so much with a big concert that when she was knocked unconscious, she released a laser beam from her chest that blew up the moon. This means she’s able to store up a ton of energy, and releasing it at once, intentionally or unintentionally, has devastating consequences.
The power of drama - When she’s really charging up her power or particularly pissed, her irises become white and her clothing (as well as anything she holds in her hands, and maybe eventually her hair) turns white. That’s why she’s called the White Violin. Her skin will also glow white and her surroundings gain a white cast the more she charges up.

Items: Vanya is coming in with her white violin, bow, and all materials she needs to maintain them. She’s also coming in with a copy of her autobiography.

SAMPLES

Network: [The camera shudders on. Those who know Vanya will notice she’s trying to experiment with her fashion—white and silver plaid shirt with silver slacks. Trying to find the middle ground between her bright white suit and her comfy oversized sweaters she always used to disappear in.

But that’s neither here nor there.]

Hi everyone. [She tries for a smile, but she still finds this whole ‘video call’ thing awkward.] I just wanted to let you all know that I’m starting violin lessons for anyone who’s interested. I was a professional violinist in life and I miss teaching, so really, you’d be doing me a favor if you take me up on it.

[A little joke. Something to make it easier to take her up on the offer, if anyone’s nervous.]

I’m Vanya. Call me if you’re interested.
